Hi Ashley, for this I think it depends a lot on your preferred way to work. If you work remotely you’ll be alone a lot and probably work from home quite a bit. Some people love this and some don’t. But the work will potentially be more challenging and better paying. It won’t hurt your work status or access to social services. It could get complicated with your taxes — because you live in one but are paid in another you may have to pay taxes in both countries. Also some companies are hesitant to hire people living in other countries or pay you into a foreign bank account, so think about that when you are deciding what type of bank accounts to keep, and you’ll need to ask companies about this. I know a woman who had an offer rescinded when they figured out she would be working remotely from France instead of the US. Hope this helps.

I am moving to France with my husband later this year and know that with my French language skills (or lack thereof), I will not be able to do the same level of work that I am doing now (healthcare management). So I am torn between trying to find something menial/low-paying in France versus trying to find something more substantial in the US or UK market that would allow me to work remotely. Would working for a non-French company harm my visa status or access to social services in anyway? How would it impact my taxes? Any intel you could share would be so helpful. Thanks!

Cheers!

I’ve just found your blog and am loving reading it. I’m British/French, currently living in Britain and thinking of moving to France. The dream is working in journalism – I’m freelancing and working in Communications at the moment – so your posts are really useful. Thank you!

One suggestion for networking is to get involved with one of the American Churches in Paris (e.g. the American Church in Paris, the American Cathedral in Paris, et al). These churches not only offer Sunday services good for the soul, but offer a number of community based programs (whether it be making sandwiches for the homeless to language classes or exercise classes). Regardless what you use the church for it’s a great way to build connections with the English/French community that could help you find work.

Keep up with the great work Charli!
